Below are two articles. Please read both and respond to the questions
at the bottom of the second article.
In an Age of Likes, Commonplace
Images Prevail

By James Estrin
PERPIGNAN, France — Photographers attending the Visa Pour l’Image festival in this small medieval city stroll through the winding streets, stopping to view carefully crafted news and documentary images exhibited inside ancient buildings.

In most ways it is not much different from years past. There is still a nightly projection, in a cloistered graveyard, where the photographers view a selection of the best images of the year. The prizewinners are applauded by their colleagues in the crowd who seem oblivious to the tsunami of vernacular photographs about to wash away everything in its path.

There are well over a billion camera phones being used to photograph dinners, dogs, cute kids, sunsets and body parts — recording every action as if it were of equal importance.

It is estimated that 380 billion images were taken last year, most with a camera phone. Over 380 million photos are uploaded on Facebook every day. Instagram is growing exponentially and had four billion photos uploaded as of July 2012.

Almost everyone has a camera and is a photographer.

Just as access to pens and paper hasn’t produced thousands of Shakespeares or Nabokovs, this explosion of camera phones doesn’t seem to have led to more Dorothea Langes or Henri Cartier-Bressons. But it has certainly led to many more images of what people ate at lunch.

And while you may not think that my iPhone photo, above, is worth a second look (or even a first glance), I can proudly report that between Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, dozens of people have judged its quality positively by liking it.

And I’m listening to them.

Because of the iPhone and social media, the very meaning of what photographs are and how they function has changed radically in the last four years.

A photograph is no longer predominantly a way of keeping a treasured family memory or even of learning about places or people that we would otherwise not encounter. It is now mainly a chintzy currency in a social interaction and a way of gazing even further into one’s navel.

This is a fundamental change that must be having a powerful effect on how people view the kind of images exhibited this week in Perpignan.

As far as I can see — admittedly from ground level — there are two possible effects on “serious” photography.
1. The flowering of photographers leads to millions of people who are thinking more visually and whom we may be able to entice to become an audience for documentary and photojournalistic images.
2. We are bombarded with so much visual stimuli via the Web and social media that it becomes almost impossible to rise above the flood of images. And if everyone likes everything, no one photograph is better than another.
I have no idea which of these situations might happen. Or if there will be a combination of these effects.
The issue is not whether one chooses to use an iPhone instead of a Leica but the ideas and vision of the photographer.

The effect of the Web on the photography business is ancient news. Film versus digital — prehistoric, at least in the accelerated time chamber of social media and the Web.

Six years ago the core questions we faced were: How do we distribute our work and make a living in the digital age? Since then, some photographers have survived, perhaps with fewer assignments and more crowdsourcing, foundation grants and N.G.O. money.

The proliferation of a commonplace — or vernacular — photography is a much more profound change. The question is not so much whether this is a good thing for society (or a bad thing for photographers). It is happening, a billion times a day, and there is no going back.

The question is: How does the photographic community harness this explosion of visual energy to expand its audience? This is what needs to be focused on.

Shooting for Global Change
DESCRIPTION
Some serious photographers might cringe at being called amateurs. Not Antonio Amendola — he wears the badge proudly.
A lawyer by trade and a photographer by choice, he once organized a workshop in his hometown of Bari, Italy, entitled “On the Seriousness of Amateur Photography.”
“If you study Latin and Greek, you know that the word amateur comes from the word amore,” Mr. Amendola said. “So they are the ones who really love photography. We take the title ‘amateur photography’ very seriously.”
He has harnessed the fervor of socially concerned amateur photographers to create Shoot 4 Change, a nonprofit that uses photography to explore little-covered issues while helping small associations and nongovernmental organizations promote their work.
Shoot 4 Change, made up of idealistic amateurs and some professional photographers, has dug into stories on homelessness, hunger, malnutrition and most recently economic distress and related civil unrest in Italy, the United States and elsewhere.
“There are hundreds of small associations, small groups of people, volunteers, that do really good work and need their stories told,” said Mr. Amendola, 41. “There are stories that want to be told, and stories that need to be told. Must be told.”
Antonio Amendola Peaceful protests by the Indignados in Rome turned violent on Tuesday.
Mr. Amendola started his group shortly after the L’Aquila earthquake in central Italy in 2009. His blog on the earthquake’s victims and photography got the attention of many photographers who wanted to volunteer. It has now morphed into a group with over 700 members throughout Italy and in New York, San Francisco and Argentina. He has also enlisted some professional photographers — including Antonio Politano, Ed Kashi, Rajibul Sheik Islam and Alfons Rodriguez — to join.
Photographers are available — at no charge — for volunteer groups and nonprofits that can’t afford photo coverage of their work. If newspapers, magazines or publishers want to use the images, their payment is split, with 60 percent going to the photographer and 40 percent to Shoot 4 Change, which uses the money to defray expenses and support social projects.
He recently started a project highlighting how economic turmoil has affected job prospects for students, the unemployed and underemployed — a generation that is “losing visibility.” The concept is to get people throughout the world to send in low resolution or pixelated photographs of themselves along with a description of how much money they live on monthly. Shoot 4 Change is setting up a Web site and a Facebook page dedicated to the project, which is called “The Low Resolution Generation.”
He said he wants to keep the organization nonpolitical and totally independent, even from sponsorship or advertising.
Mr. Amendola still works full-time as a lawyer, but he spends an equal amount of time on strengthening Shoot 4 Change and encouraging photographers to help to change the world.
“I use the motto, ‘Shoot local, change global,’” he said.

1. The website, Shoot4Change offers different challenges in all different languages. It brings photography all around the world to one place.

2. Smart phone, tablets, instagram and other applications like these have changed the photography world in both positive and negatives ways. A couple good ways are that it makes it easier and more accesible to people at the click of a button. On the other hand, people don't want to do things the old fashioned way so they're not esposed to the history of photgraphy.

3. Photography may reinvent itself with the new technology. Now being able to use computers to access editing softwares people will want to do it because it is easier.

1. Shoot4Change offers a chance for photographers to show their work world-wide and help them show the problems that they are dealing with locally. This site would help me as a new photographer because it will put my photos out into the world to be seen by everyone and it can help me as a civilian because I can help get people around the world to help with problems here.

2.Smart Phones, tablets, instagram, and other technology have changed photography in a good way because it has gotten more people interested in photography and has made it easier to take pictures; however, it is harder for professional photographers to get jobs and there is less meaning behind the pictures.

3.The new technology will make it easier to take pictures and edit them without using a whole bunch of equipment which will get more people to want to become a photographer and it would be cheaper to create the photos so they would make more money.

1. Shoot4Change gives armature photographer to show the world pictures to show problems happening right now. This site gives EVERYONE the ability to show the world your photography but also send a message across about a world problem.

2.Smart Phones, tablets, instagram, and other technology have give many more people the ability to shoot photos that can be edited without having to have talent or a skill which is required in professional photography. I think this has had a negative effect on the industry, however; not enough to have people lose their jobs. I think it gives a false idea that it is easy to do what professional photographers do.

3.I think that new technology can reinvent the photo industry by making the turnaround time shorter and the overall accessibly easier. I think it would open up a door for a lot of people.

1. Shoo4Change is a great website that allows people to show of photos of whats going on in today's world.

2.its great in many ways because it gives people the ability to show off what there doing, but no one wants to learn about the history of photography and its almost like anyone can be a photographer.

3.Photography is already becoming big and its only gonna get bigger as it becomes easier to take pictures.

1. Shoot4change is the thing that can let photo takers show their work to everyone, as a new photographer, it could let you become known

2. Smart phones, tablets, instragram and other things used to take photos just created more ways to do photography, and get people interested... its bad because real photographers believe in taking legitment photos with a camera and the lifestyle of it, not just taking a picture on your i pad for say.

3. Pictures are becoming better and mor and more people are staring to become interested in the career. Plus, the editing technology advances will cause photos to become better also.

Mike Boyle said...

1. The site offers photographers to both show their photos and make them known. In the simplest terms, it lets legitimate photography blossom.

2. While the new technology has diluted the quality of photos, it also brings about more people interested in photography that can become great at it.

3. Considering all the different types of Photoshop and different kinds of pictures you can make, a photographer that knows all that could make plenty of money for true quality photos instead of simple click and uploaded pictures.

1. Shoot4Change offers people to show their work (photos) with other people. Everyone is able to see it, the program is aimed for a new photographer, it is also for aimed towards current events. It is easy to use and very helpful to a new phtographer. It also is in different languges. It is a useful sight.

2. New and up comming technology such as smart phones, tablets, etc. has changed photography in positive and negative ways. A positive effect is it is extreamly easy to take a picture and edit it. You just press a button and you already have a great photo. However, that can be bad though. Because of this easy effect, people have gotten lazy and less interested in the history of photography.

3. I think it will be harder to find a job as a photographer, soon, everyone will have a similar camera and will be hard to make your photo stand out. It will be easier to take a photo, and less exspensive, but it will create less jobs for photoraphers.

1. As a civilian I thought it was great that the people behind this organization were willing to help associations in need of publicity and that all you needed to do was contact them and they would help you find a way to get your story out to the public. So many organizations have no money and no ability to tell their story to get help from others. The images that they had on their home page were really well done.
As a new photographer, it would give me the opportunity to work with other professionals and perhaps get feedback. While I would be working for free, the cause would be good and the experience would be excellent. It could be an opportunity to get my name in public if I wanted to become a professional photographer.

2. In my opinion, these devices have taken much of the “art” out of photography. There has always been a difference between my home pictures and photography displayed in magazines, tv, even the web. Today, that is no longer true. If you can get a shot of the car crash, you can get it on tv or the web. If you can get video of some earthquake result, it’s on.
Is it good? Yes, it’s good to see real life captured instead of set up and airbrushed or filtered. Is it bad? Yes, everything seems so rushed. We have to know everything and see all the gory details instead of living a little simpler, less stressful life at a slower pace where we could not only stop and smell the roses but also admire them and perhaps consider them as art.
3. Photography has moved into the digital age. With that, photography will become more creative. It will move and flow and change. It will let people see it with options. It will be more than 3D. Photographers will have to become technology savvy. There will be a place for the printed picture for some time to come but information will become more and more visual. Photographers will need to find a way to blend more information with “pictures”.

1.The website, Shoot4Change offers different challenges in all different languages. It brings photography all around the world to one place. It allows for 'underground' artists to shoot photos. It supplies a place for other websites to be featured for even more oppotunities and challenges. iT could be useful for students because they can put their work on there and get feedback from real people in the world with real world experience (experience outside of the classroom).

2. Smart phone, tablets, instagram and other applications like these have changed the photography world in both positive and negatives ways. 1. Shoot 4 Change is a nonprofit organization that shoots modern day issues around the world. It Allows people of different nationalities; languages and backgrounds to all come together and share their common love of photography. It allows for armatures and new photographers to put their work out on a known website for free and possibly get noticed.
2. Smart phones, tablets, and instagram have changed the world of photography because they allow for everyone to put their work out in public and be a photographer. This is good because it gives everyone who loves photography, amateur or professional, to share their work and art form with the world. It could have a negative effect on the actual industry because there are so many more chances for people to become professional photographers than before, giving everyone who wants to pursue photography as a career a more limited window of opportunity.
3. New technology has become a more profitable career because with everything digital, cameras are able to better capture the lighting and look of the moment when it was actually taking place. Digital cameras have also cut out the cost of film and made it so that you can take many more photos in one shoot for a way cheaper price.

1. Shoot4change offers opportunities for all photographers, experienced or not to showcase their work on a global scale. It also offers free photographers for volunteer organizations that cannot afford to pay for media coverage for themselves. Shoot4Change helps get the word out about global issues through photography. As a civilian, this site gives me insight into what is happening around the world. As a new photographer, it gives me a platform to showcase my work and a place where I can admire others' work.

2. Smart phones, tablets, instgram and other photography apps have influenced the photography world majorly. They give everyone an opportunity to shoot photos without having to spend a lot of money on expensive equipment. Things like Instagram lets everyone share their photos with one and other and gives photography a platform. The negative side effects are it takes away some of the history of photography and possibly makes it too easy.

3.With new technology, photography as a career may be able to reinvent itself and become profitable because everyone now has access to it. People don't have to spend a lot on equipment and there are so many platforms over the internet to sell and share photos.

1) As an amateur photographer, this website has a lot to offer. It can help to recognize issues overseen in your local area, as well as just get you started in the career or hobby of photography. To post pictures, all you have to do is join the S4C group. As well, each picture posted is put into a category with the comment function. This allows other people and experienced photographers to comment on and criticize your work, making you a better photographer.

2) The smart phones, tablet, instagram, as well as many other recent breakthroughs have influenced the world of photography. These influences have been viewed as both good, and bad, from different aspects. Good things about these new things are that now anyone can capture photos, opening up a whole different genre of photography. It also interests a lot more people in photography. From the bad perspective, now there are millions of photos uploaded every single day, making it hard to distinguish good photos from bad ones. It is safe to say that many more "bad" photos are taken now then "good" ones.

3) With new technology, the photography world needs to embrace it, as opposed to shying away and sticking with traditional methods. The photography industry has been changed through doing everything digitally now. Rather than just taking a photo, people are now able to edit them at the tip of their fingertips with better software being developed everyday. Photos are able to be enhanced much better than they used to be.

1. The Website Shoot4Change is a site that professional and amateur photographers can post photos. Their photos represent some issues that they think are important or interesting.

2. New technology like iphones, tablets and more have changed photography because now a days anyone can take a picture which is a good thing. But people forget that real photography should capture something important.

3. Now with new technology editing photos will become more advanced which will make then look the best they can be.

1. Shoot4Change is about giving a voice (or in this case a picture) to those who may have previously gone unheard. Through the art of photography serious issues are being brought to light and showcased to millions of people through the Internet. For us, as amateur photographers, it allows a chance for our photos to be published immediately if we choose to post them. It also allows us to keep up with current events in a visual way.
2. Since so many people have access to a camera at their fingertips, it's easy to capture every memory and moment. However, between the numerous social networking sights, these photos are been judged on a regular basis by friends and family. It is, of course, amazing that so many people have become interested in this hobby and that it is easier than ever to share beautiful and funny aspects of life. But if everyone can edit a picture using Instagram, what differentiates the quality of one from another? It is easy for this generation to lose sight of the hardwork that use to go into completely changing the look of a photo. We take for granted what has always been at our fingertips.
3. I think photographers of today have to reinvent and reevaluate their careers. Becoming skilled in something like Photoshop can be greatly beneficial since it is used on every book and magazine cover. Also, those accustomed to film cameras may have to make the switch to digital. No one wants to wait around for a picture to develop when there are devices that let you view it immediately. At the same time, the sudden boom in interest in photography may help professional photographers. More and more people have access to their work online, which may help generate interest in them. One thing is for sure, though, pictures have to be spectacular and original in order to generate interest. Half the world has already uploaded a picture of a sunset, so people are looking for something new and exciting they can't see every night.

1) Shoot 4 Change is looking to become a "hub" for socially conscientious photography. Shoot 4 Change looks to sell its photos to companies: newspapers, online sites, etc in order to fund its brand of activism. Working as an "international network of volunteers...in the defense of human rights by reporting and telling forgotten, undeerstimated or ignored stories."I think this site would be most useful to those looking to learn about problems that haven't the eye of the mainstream media. Or on the other hand if you have an issue that need to be covered I am sure S4C would be more than happy to help or accept contributions.

2)The influx of camera phones and the like has literally turned everyone and their mother into a photographer, but has it made better photographers. From what I have been taught the best camera is the one you have with; more cameras is a good thing because the more cameras the more pictures. We could have argument about the quality of these photos but in my opinion you can allays delete the shitty ones.

3)Photograph as a career can reinvent it's self for not only capturing what we see to what we make society as a whole feel. With such easy access in the forum of social media, the window is opened to influence more people than ever before. With thousands of photos being shared every second across the internet it is not difficult to capitalize on this "new wave"

1. Shoot4Change offers a chance for photographers to show their work world-wide and help them show the problems that they are dealing with locally or major world issues. It also allows people who are both professional and amateur photographers to display their pictures for the world to see and helps to bring about change through pictures.

Also, it would make creating the picture they want easier and faster because they can change the photo in a matter of minutes even seconds instead of spending hours.

1. Shoot4Change brings photographers and their techniques together from all around the world. It gives photographes the chance to show their work to the world and spread the word of worldly issues we're facing today. This website would help me because it would get my photos out to the public world and let me spread the word of the worldly issues I believe are important to share.
2. Smart phones, tablets, instagram and other apps/technology have changed photography in both good and bad ways. Good: it has gotten millions more of people interested in taking photos and has made it easier than anthing to do so. Bad: it has made professional photographers look less than they are, and are taking out the history and techniques of photography and throwing them away.
3. New technology will bring new people into the world of photography and make taking photos and making them better a lot easier making people more willing to learn it. There isn't as much equipment involved anymore, just a camera and a computer and you're set. Also, with technology rising the price of printed photos will most likely be cheaper, letting the photographers bring in more income.

1. Shoot for change is a global nonprofit organization for photographers to publish their photos. It gives them the oppurtunity to share their work not only locally but world wide. it would help me if I ever wanted to share my photographs with a larger audience.

2. Smart phones, tablets, instagram made taking and sharing photos a lot easier but also lessened the worth of a good picture/photography. Major camera companies, like Kodak and Fuji Film, are going bankrupt due to this new technology. The art of photography is becoming more universal but at the same time it is getting easier and decreasing the quality.
3. Online editing is much more convienant for photographers, and a lot more people would be able to do it. It has a larger appeal to a wider audience now that it "easier" to take a "good" picture.

1. The organization Shoot4Change is offering a way for amateur photographers to showcase their work and develop their talent, as well as visual access to the issues facing our world today to the average person. Any photographer, whether they be the normal person with their camera phone or the experienced professional, is able to submit their work to the website. Additionally, they are able to choose a topic they have interest in. As an amateur, this website could help me begin to get the photographs I take out into the new world, and to develop my talent and knowledge of photography by seeing the work that others, especially the professionals, have put onto the website. As a civilian, it is an easily accessible way to not only learn about issues facing the world today, but to see the issues for themselves
2. The growth of technology like iphones, instagram, and facebook has changed photography for better and for worse. To begin with, the new technology has made the world of photography better because it has become more accessible. It is now easy to take a picture of your cat and share it with all of your friends; when doing the same thing ten years ago would be a long, arduous process. Also, now anyone can be a photographer. All they need is a camera phone, and then point and shoot and they have a photo. It is no longer reserved to the people knowledgeable in the workings of a camera and development of pictures. However, new technology has made the world of photography worse. When a picture from a camera phone is posted on facebook, it may get thousands of views. But, a photo taken with a high end camera and published in a magazine may not get half as many views. So, the quality of photos that are commonly viewed is lower than it used to be, which makes the overall quality of the world of photography lower.
3. In my opinion, a career in photography that may surface as a profitable job choice in the future is offering classes to average photographers on how to improve their work. Since anyone today can easily take a picture, there is a lot more interest in the subject than there used to be. So, people will want to learn how to improve the pictures they are taking, so their photographs can get more likes and views.

Any person can upload their pictures. Also, they are able to choose a topic. The website could help me with visual aspects of professional photagraphy As a civilian. It aso gives people the chance to see current world issues. 2. technilogical devices are becoming more and more abundant. The thing that it drags along with it are the cameras and photo editing apps that are molding todays "fads". For instance if John takes a picture with Sally together with their tounges sticking out in front of a tree, he will forever remember the memory. The next time John sees a phtoto resembling nearly the same thing it will trigger him to like the photo due to the reation. 3. There should be classes teaching the originality and old fashion ways of taking a photo and not letting those methods die out. With out orginality and simplicity, there is no art. It is not art

1.) The website Shoot4Change is offering every photographer the chance to showcase their work on a global scale. It doesn't matter whether you are a professional photographer or it is something you just do for fun; everyone is welcome to show their work to a broad spectrum of photography appreciators.

2.) Devices such as smart phones, tablets, and instagram have changed the world of photography in a good way in which an everyday person without an in-depth understanding of photo editing can still edit photos by themselves because it is simple to use, and the resources are right there in front of you. However, these devices have hurt the world of photography because people who's job used to be editing photos are no longer needed because the everyday person can now edit there own photos because of these devices. The photo-editing industry is a dying industry.

3.) Photography may be able to reinvent itself with these new devices because photographers could help people learn how to use these products more effectively by knowing how these devices came to be and were created. Also, photographers now can edit photos much better than they could originally because now they have all the tools they need to edit digitally and mistakes can be corrected digitally while it couldn't before. Overall, photographers have a much easier time editing there photos digitally and can produce much more photos.

The negative side is that people think theyre really good photographers just beacause they have apps like intagram that edit the pictures for them and also they dont learn the history of photography.
3.It is already becoming big because it isnt as expensive or hard as it used to be when they had to print the film, now all they do is plug them into a computer and print everything perfectly. also, some cameras are automatic which makes everything easier for people that desire to be photographers.

3. I think that photography will invent itself because the large influx of people that are good with technology will outweigh those that don't, therefor the digital world will expand and photography will be reinvented.

More and more people have access to their work online, which may help generate interest in them. One thing is for sure, though, pictures have to be spectacular and original in order to generate interest.

1. The shoot 4 change website offers many opprotunities to new photographers. One thing that it offers is that it allows new photographers to volunteer for organizations and take pictures for them. By doing this you can possibly have your picture appear in many popular newspapers. You will even get paid if your work is selected. Also this is a great way for you to get your name out there for future business opportunities.
2.The new advancements in technology have had a major impact on the photography field for better and for worse. For the better now that everyone has new technology such as cell phones, ipads and instagram almost everyone is now a photographer. This has lead to millions of photos being uploaded to social media websites every day.The down side of the new technology is that images by great professional photographers are being lost within all the new photos and social media images shot by amatures.
3.I believe that the photography business will be able to reinvent itself even though it may be difficult because of all the new technology and interest in photography by amature photographers. A greatway for photographers to reinevetn the business is to find a certain type of photography and speacialize in that specific type that not many people may be shooting.
