Let's Begin!!

Today:
Will begin to dabble in photoshop today with a silo project which will be guided. I expect you to take notes independently on components you feel you do not want to forget as we go and do so in a google doc named silo. Photoshop is extremely layered. . .a lot to learn.

Step 1: download this image to your desktop by right clicking and choosing "save picture as"
Step 2: open Photoshop (also right click on the image)
Step 3: save as silo cup
Step 4: Pen tool in left tool bar (hover over tools for names)
Step 5: Begin to create points around the entire cup and saucer only. To make a curve, click and drag in the direction you are going
Step 6: Hold down the pen tool option for additional editing tools to fix your path LATER after you have drawn the whole path
TAKE YOUR TIME AND FOCUS. You want a clean silo

Student, Zack Cusack, took the project one step further by manipulating
masks and color selections. This image will lead us into our next lesson in photoshop -
color and what is the difference between RGB, CMYK and more. Feel free to
comment on what you think and what tools/steps he used/took to create this image.

Homework:
We will begin with an article on the birth of photoshop for homework - due on 12th - Aday and 13th - Bday. You will be expected to comment on this article. All must comment and post by stated dates.

Please give me some thoughts you may of had about photoshop, before reading this article, but how your thoughts or what you knew has changed since reading this article.

From Darkroom to Desktop—How Photoshop Came to Light

(Article written in Feb 2000)

by Derrick StoryTen years ago this month, Adobe shipped Photoshop 1.0. "Has it really been that long?"
It has.
The story of one of the original "killer apps" begins in Ann Arbor, Michigan (USA) with a college professor named Glenn Knoll. Glenn was a photo enthusiast who maintained a darkroom in the family basement. He was also a technology aficionado intrigued by the emergence of the personal computer. His two sons, Thomas and John, inherited their father's inquisitive nature. And the vision for future greatness began with their exposure to Glenn's basement darkroom and with the Apple II Plus that he brought home for research projects.
"Photography was a hobby of mine in high school," explained Thomas in an interview for the Michigan Engineer. "In dad's darkroom, I learned how to make black-and-white and color prints, how to balance color and contrast."
While Thomas learned about image manipulation in the basement darkroom, John was attracted to the odd-shaped box known as a personal computer that his dad had brought home. "The first real computer I ever actually sat down and used was in 1978. I was a 16-year-old high school student when my dad got an Apple II Plus with 64k of RAM," John recalls during an interview for his AppleMasters biography.
"Another memory that is really fixed in my mind" John adds, "was in 1984 when I picked up a copy of Time magazine that had a little article about the Macintosh, and I thought, wow, look at this thing!" A couple of months later Mr. Knoll had purchased one of the first Macs available on the open market.
Even though Thomas loved hands-on darkroom work, he too had a keen interest in computers and programming. In 1987 he purchased an Apple Macintosh Plus to help him with his Ph.D. work on the "processing of digital images." Much to his disappointment, the Mac couldn't display gray-scale levels in his images. To solve that problem, Thomas wrote a subroutine to simulate the gray-scale effect.
Thomas's work led to more subroutines and chunks of image programming. These bits of computer magic caught John's attention during a visit he paid to Ann Arbor while on vacation from his job at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) in Marin, California. "The work Thomas was doing had to do with how a computer could recognize a predefined object in a digitized picture," John recalls in an interview with Terrence Masson for the book, "CG 101: A Computer Graphics Industry Reference".
"Image processing is the fundamental basis of any of that kind of work, and Tom had written a bunch of image processing tools," John adds. "As Tom showed me his work, it struck me how similar it was to the image processing tools on the Pixar [image computer John had just seen a graphics demo on at ILM]."
"There were a bunch of command line driven shell tools much like the Unix C shell command line interface of the Pixar." Shortly there after, John and Thomas pulled these pieces of code together and Thomas built an amazing little application called "Display."
"I was delighted," John said, "but I started asking for more. What if Display could save images in other formats so I could print them in another program? I used Display to open a couple of sample images that I got from the ILM computer graphics department, but they looked too dark on my screen—suddenly I needed gamma correction tools too." John's requests distracted Thomas from his thesis work, but he too was intrigued by the possibilities of image editing on a personal computer.
This cycle of refinement continued over a period of months and led to an improved version of the application that became "ImagePro" in 1988. At this point John began suggesting to Thomas that they turn ImagePro into a commercial application. "My fellowship money had run out and my wife was expecting our first child," Thomas explained during the Michigan Engineer interview. "I was feeling pressure to finish what I was doing and find a job."
In early 1988, Thomas decided to give himself six more months to finish a beta version of ImagePro and let John shop it around Silicon Valley. Interestingly enough, many of the Silicon Valley companies that John approached were cool to the idea of their image manipulation program. SuperMac turned it down because they didn't understand how ImagePro could complement their already popular product, PixelPaint.
But one company, BarneyScan, did show some interest. They offered to bundle (on a short term basis) what was now called "Photoshop" with their slide scanner. A total of about 200 copies of Photoshop were shipped with their scanners, according to Jeff Schewe in his article, "Photoshop: a Decade of Image-Editing Excellence."

Before reading this article, I knew very little to nothing about Photoshop; however, upon reading this article I was able to understand the process of creating it. I initially thought that photoshop was simply a program used to edit photos in regards to making them look better, for example, placing an individual's head on another body, or trimming down a person's legs to make them appear skinnier. I was not familiar with the other options photoshop posesses, like the ability to change the colors of an imagine completely. I also had no idea about the strugglesthese individuals faced when trying to develop the product (rejection by large companies), and how fairly recent this product was developed (10 years not being too long for an invention). Lasty, I never knew that Mac computers were among the first computers used for programs like these, and how far they have come over the years.

Prior to reading this article, I knew a decent amount about photoshop because I was exposed to it at an architecture internship I did this summer. It was very suprising to find out that some of the first, more popular computers, were macs. It was also interesting to read that 2 brothers worked together to develop an amazing idea and application. It's suprising that the other companies didn't see the future of their invention and help support them.

I found this article interesting and very informative. Before reading this article, my knowledge of Photoshop was very poor. After reading this article I now understand its original purpose and its present misuse. The application was originally created to perform the task of displaying gray-scale levels, but grew into the creation of numerous subroutines and “chunks of image programming.” I also was not aware of how long it has been around, and that it started on Mac computers. I think it is rather misused today as a tool to make pictures appear unrealistically flawless rather than raw and authentic.

Before reading the article, i didn't know anything about photoshop. I thought it was a relatively new program. It's strange to find out it was started with a mac and Supermac wasn't interested in buying it.

Before reading this article, I didn't know anything about Photoshop. It was very interesting how two brothers worked together to create such a known and well used program to this day. Their ideas just kept piling on top of eachother trying to better the program. Questions like "What if Display could save images in other formats so I could print them in another program?" started to form Photoshop. I also did not know that Macintosh computers as well as Apple computers were used to create Photoshop. This article gave me a better understanding of what Photoshop was originally made for instead of what it is used for today.

After reading this article, I know a lot more about Photoshop than I ever did. It is really interesting and amazing to me how two brothers could create a program like Photoshop, just by asking simple questions and experimenting. Photoshop was used for different things before today and this article really made me understand that. Mac and Apple products also played a big role in the process of creating Photoshop, which I never knew. This article gave me a much better understanding of the making of Photoshop.

I find it interesting how there was no original purpose for photoshop, it was two tech-savvy brothers and one of them liked to take photos. Then they started thinking and noticing different things with the mac computers and after writing many subroutines, photoshop snowballed into the very large product it is today.

This article really taught me alot about Photoshop. Prior to reading this, the only things I knew about photoshop were what you told us in class on tuesday. I found it very interesting how all of the tools were developed and made to work. He sort of just sat there thinking "In what ways can I edit a photograph and how would I make that possible on here?" However, the most surprising thing about this article is the general lack of interest in the Program. Photoshop allows you to edit photographs quicker, easier with less risk of harming the actual photograph than if done by hand. The fact that only one company showed interest in this astounds me.

Before reading this article i didn't know anything about Photoshop or what we were going to learn in class, but after this reading i noticed that a picture takes a lot of work to be perfect. This article thought me about the born of Photoshop by Thomas and his family who were really involved in this project and expand it through the years. I thought that was cool!!!!!

Before I read this article, I really didn't know anything about photoshop except that photography majors use it to edit their pictures. I have heard you can do some pretty cool things on it, and I was impressed by what we did on the first day of class with the cups. I had no idea how old photoshop was and it is very interesting that two such young people were its founders. It is also interesting that SuperMac turned down the program. I'm sure they regret that now. Im excited to work more with the program!

I really had never actually used photo shop. After using it in class I found that it is quite fun, although tedious work. I knew nothing about the history of photo shop as well. I love the way it was created because it shows the greatness of human engineering. The way that their passion for photos led to the invention of Photoshop is really cool. Now I want to learn some more so I can really apriciate the program

Before I read this article, I had some experience with using Adobe Photoshop CS5, but I haven't really researched the history of Photoshop. I thought it was interesting how the article talked about how there were many photographers that had used black rooms to develop there photos. Then switched to Photoshop and they were dis-pointed in the quality of the filters. Then created new subprogram to enhance the filters. This article made me realize how Photoshop has revolutionized the art of photography in just two decades of operations.

After reading this article, I feel more informed on the building blocks of photoshop. At the time that these men were playing around with the soon to be Photoshop program, there was nothing out there that could do what we take for granted now. To see how these men wished to do something physical on a computer and made it happen is very interesting. I feel that most people overlook what at one time was impossible to do to digital photographs. Because of these men, photo editing has become what we do so easily today.

My reflection to this article is quite clear cut; after reading this article I found it to be 'of quality.' It was knowledgeable to how Photoshop came to be and how much trouble they must have gone through to get to where they are now. Photoshop has indeed improved on the tedious work of 'black-rooming' and it will hopefully keep on improving. All in all this article was a good reminiscent of the past. I will hopefully and improve on my Photoshop expertise by the end of Senior year.

I learned on where it originated from and how it is used. After practicing on it in class a little and reading the article I look forward to using Photoshop a lot more often. I think its history and origins are very interesting and the article really showed me how much transformation went into this program over time. I didn't know that the program was so young. I thought it would be at least a little bit older. I never knew that Photoshop had so many functions, but I was aware of some of them. I have used Photoshop express a couple of times, but I have never used the full program before prior to the class. As a former graphic communications major, I knew much about the basics of hotosjop and it's photo manipulation capabilities. I knew about changing color, brightness, using different effects and the ability to change a photograph from something plain to your heart's desire. However, I did not know the history of the creation of photoshop. These men struggled so much to get their program on the market (facing companies' denial, money, ect) even though it is currently the leader of photo manipulation programs and how it was first created on Mac computers. Maybe that is why macs are prevalent in the graphic design "world" than commercially.

The companies that rejected the idea probably feel like fools now because of how famous photoshop has become. It seems like there is an infinite amount of options that you can use on it. These boys were very persistent and determined to make this work, and it paid off big time. These stories just make me more excited to get to know and use Photoshop

I found it incredible how it only took two brothers to come up with the idea of creating this program. Photoshop has really opened everyone's eyes to edit photographs. Before Photoshop I would use sites such as Picnick or Photobucket to edit my photos. I feel like Photoshop does come in handy and is a faster and more efficient way of editing a photo, however the old fashioned way looks more professional but takes more time and effort. All in all Photoshop is an amazing program and just from this article I learned more about Photoshop and I am glad that I am not clueless anymore.

I always took it for granted, but after reading the article, I have a much deeper appreciation for the program itself, and the ambitious man who was mostly the reason that it is what it is today- a tremendously powerful tool for photo manipulation. I never really understood how to make such a program you have to write codes for all of the tools and literally everything that is composed in photoshop. It truly is breathtaking where we are today with this amazing photo editing software
